Proof of English Language Proficiency

All international (F1) students, even those from countries where the official language is English, must provide proof of English language proficiency for admission. English placement determines if a student will begin their studies in our ESL program, English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP) program, or degree study. The following tests are accepted:

MC ESL Guided Placement Test - students may request this test by emailing their assigned international student coordinator.

Duolingo English Test new window (DET). A score of 110 or higher places students into degree study. Students who place below 110 must complete the MC ESL Guided Placement Test.

International English Language Testing System new window (IELTS). A score of 6.5 or higher places students into degree study. Students who place below 6.5 must complete the MC ESL Guided Placement Test.

Test of English as a Foreign Language new window (TOEFL). A score of 90 or higher on the internet-based test (iBT) places students into degree study.

Students are required to submit their official scores by logging in to their Duolingo, IELTS, or TOEFL account and selecting Montgomery College as the recipient. Students in the U.S. may also submit their official score by visiting a Raptor Central office and logging in to their account from one of the Raptor Central computers with a staff member present. Students who place below 90 must complete the MC ESL Guided Placement Test.
